EST. 2006


Mission:  To enhance science education with “real-life” science beyond the conventional classroom; including competitions, professional outreach, conferences/conventions, meetings, lectures, and research based, lab driven, field experiences for students who have career interests in science, engineering, math, and/or technology fields.

Science Academy students must:

✭     Have a career interest in science, technologyengineering, and/or math (STEM) field.

     Pass three core science courses (CP or Honors level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics).  Course Offerings

     Have a minimum of two science electives. One of these electives must be at the Advanced Placement or Dual Credit level.  Course Offerings

    Successfully complete math courses to the level of pre-calculus or equivalent level.

    Attend FHS Science Academy lectures.

     Be an active participant in a variety of science related activities such as: competitions, peer tutoring, workshops, professional science organization meeting, Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, or other board approved activities.

     Have a minimum of one semester of field experience in a program approved by the science department advisory committee.  Science Research Mentoring Project.

✭      Prepare a photo essay that describes your research experience.

Upon successful fulfillment of these requirements students will receive special recognition upon graduation.

Academy Announcements
Mandatory Meeting Friday Dec 11, 2009
All fall research students should plan to meet in Ms. Baksa's room O103 during 4th block Friday December 11, 2009.  If you are a summer only research student plan to meet after school in Ms. Baksa's room on Dec. 11.  The purpose of the meeting is to collect data regarding your research projects for possible publication.

ORNL Poster Session Dec 10
Science Academy students whose research was conducted at ORNL will be participating the ORNL Poster Session Thursday December 10, 2009 at ORNL from 1:00-3:00pm.
Deadlines for final products Dec 9 and Dec 14
Your posters, photo essays, and abstracts are due Wednesday December 9, 2009.  Your research paper is due Monday December 14, 2009

Science Academy Research Poster Session December 10, 2009

Under the guidance of research scientist mentors FHS students have been conducting research at UTK, ORNL and the Knoxville Zoo this past school year. This poster session allows the students an opportunity to present their results and showcase their work. The event will be held in the Farragut High School commons from 7pm-8pm.  Students, teachers, and community members are invited to attend this "academic pep rally" to view the exciting work these students have completed. Refreshments will be provided by several local businesses.
